Selenite Cystine Broth is based upon Selenite Broth described by Leifson (1).  The Food and Drug Administration proposed Selenite Cystine Broth, as an enrichment medium for detecting Salmonella in food materials (2).

Selenite Cystine Broth is recommended by AOAC, USP, and APHA as a selective enrichment medium for Salmonella spp., while inhibiting the growth of other gram-negative organisms (3-5).

With the addition of Mannitol to Selenite Cystine Broth it was found by Hobbs and Allison to be superior to other liquid medium in selecting Salmonella typhi and that it was as good as Tetrathionate Broth for the isolation of Salmonella paratyphi B (6).
